Four Foods That Boost Your Immune System.

The weather in the Triangle has been a roller coaster ride this spring.  The drastic changes in temperature have been wreaking havoc on people for the past few months.  Whether it is allergies, the flu, or the common cold, these diseases have been making the rounds.  Did you know that there are certain foods that can help boost your immune system and prevent you from becoming sick?  Here are a few examples:

 

Citrus Fruits -  It is common knowledge that a healthy dose of Vitamin C can help to boost our immune systems. We go straight for the Vitamin C when we feel a cold coming on.  Many may not know that consuming Vitamin C when you are not sick can help to prevent colds.  Vitamin C is thought to help boost our bodies white bloods cells, which are necessary to fighting off diseases. Some common examples of citrus fruits are grapefruits, oranges, lemons, limes, and clementines.  

 

Yogurt - According to the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, there have been many studies conducted on the effects of eating yogurt on the immune system.  While they say there are limits to the interpretations of the results, a strong hypothesis has been developed which contends yogurt can contribute to a stronger immune system.  You want to look for yogurts with high levels of Vitamin D.  Vitamin D has been thought to help boost your bodies natural defenses to fight off diseases.  

 

Red Peppers - Red Peppers are said to have more Vitamin C in them than citrus fruits.  This large amount of Vitamin C is what makes these peppers ideal for fighting off diseases and boosting your immune system.

 

Green Tea - Working in a coffee shop, I have many sick people that come in asking for a cup of green tea.  I never understood why green tea was such desirable product for people who are sick until I began doing research for this post.  According to an article on Healthline.com, green tea is packed with flavonoids, which is a type of antioxidant. Green tea is also a good source of an amino acid called L-theanine, which is said to be a producer of germ fighting compounds in your cells. 

 

The weather outside is getting crazy and people are trying any and every method to get through cold and flu season unscathed.  Many people do not know that the foods they eat can contribute to getting sick or staying healthy.  You can tell all your friends that you are eating your way through this cold and flu season.
